Outlander gets shout-out on The Simpsons; Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe react

Outlander season 4

There are a couple of signs that you’ve made it big as a pop-culture phenomenon — you become a clue on Jeopardy, and you also end up getting recognized on The Simpsons. Luckily, Outlander has now managed to achieve both.

On a recent episode of The Simpsons, you saw the trial of Krusty the Clown turn on a dime over a B- review of the Starz drama — there’s some funny commentary in here about the show getting good after eight episodes (we think it gets good long before that), and we’re honestly surprised that it remains the focus of the court scene longer than just a couple of seconds. Krusty is proclaimed as being free to go, and for Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, this is as great an honor as any review or awards-show nomination that they’ve received. You can see the two of them react to the shout-out at the bottom of the article, and suffice it to say, they are delighted.

Why is getting a shout-out on The Simpsons such a big deal? Well, the obvious answer is that this is the most-famous primetime animated comedy ever and it’s seen all over the world. Beyond that, its episodes are often composed many months ahead of time. That means that in order for a pop-culture shout-out to make it into the script, the writers have to be really confident that it’s still going to be relevant at the time in which the show airs. Clearly, there was a good bit of confidence here when it came to the success of Outlander as a show, otherwise The Simpsons would’ve never bothered to include it.

The shout-out couldn’t have also come at a better time, given that Outlander is gearing up to say goodbye to its latest batch of episodes. You’re going to see the season 4 finale air on Starz this Sunday, and following that, we’re going to have an extended hiatus of many months. The timing here is purely coincidental — we don’t exactly think that The Simpsons meant for this to be cross-promotion given the fact that it airs at the same time that Outlander does, and also on a different network with a different parent company.

In the end, it’s just fun — and a cool way for some viewers to learn about the show who maybe didn’t know about it beforehand.
