Outlander season 4 episode 12: Richard Rankin on a very different Roger

Outlander

On Outlander season 4 episode 12, we ended up with Roger in a very different place than we saw him in previously this season. Do we think that he still loves Brianna? Certainly, but he also understands the hopelessness of the situation that he’s now in. He makes a move, in offering mercy to Alexandre, that is true to who he is. It’s not something that he wanted to do at first, but it’s still something that he decided was right.

But in the aftermath of all of this, what is going to happen next for Roger? Well, we do anticipate that we are going to continue to see a very evolved version of this character. That is something that Richard Rankin echoes in a new interview with Town & Country on the subject:

I think we see a very different, deep, interesting character by the end of season four, which gives us an exciting platform into season five with him.

I think we aren’t sure sure what to expect from him now. When we leave him at the end of season four, we’re unsure with what we think of him and what we think he might be about now. Whereas, we were certain in seasons two and three of what he was. There’s was no question that he was this lovely, friendly, loving, humble assistant professor of history at Oxford, but he’s not that anymore. He’s very much a changed person.

We do think that Roger is still capable of love and caring for Brianna, but we also think he’s going to need to process what’s happened to him in the event that he ever gets a chance to get on the other side of this. He really hasn’t had a stretch of time in months where he’s been able to actually take a moment and not be concerned for his life and his future. Sooner or later, that is going to get to you and impact you in some ways that are almost impossible to call in advance.

Maybe Outlander will conclude season 4 with some reasons to have hope for Roger. Yet, it’s also hard to determine just how much room they’re going to have given that there’s only one episode left and it feels like there is still so much content left to address.
