Outlander season 4 episode 12 ratings expectations, opposite NFL football

Outlander

Going into tonight’s Outlander season 4 episode 12, how much should we hope for when it comes to the ratings? That’s the focus of this particular piece!

We should start off this piece with a positive reminder of the show’s recent success — this past episode drew 1.27 total live viewers, the best total for the season to date. We’ve seen a lot of positive growth as of late with the show, which we attribute to a number of different things including the progression / quality of the series and then also the changes in competition at the 8:00 p.m. Eastern timeslot.

We’re aware that for most diehard fans, they’ve already watched Outlander by the time 8:00 rolls around. Sometimes, they opt to do so via the app; other times, they do so On-Demand. The people who choose to watch the show via traditional television are likely having to choose between it and other options — options for themselves, and potentially options for other family members. There’s been a notable uptick in the show’s ratings since the NFL stopped broadcasting games on Sunday night. Maybe there is a crossover audience between the show and football fans, or maybe Outlander viewers are having to give up the TV to people who are football fans.

Unfortunately, tonight’s ratings are probably going to be hit because of the AFC Championship Game, which will likely be going on during most of this broadcast. This is one of the biggest football games of the year so more than likely, there’s going to be an even harder struggle to get people watching Outlander live.

Our expectation

We feel like tonight’s Outlander will probably draw around 1.1 million viewers, with many people choosing to catch it on DVR after the fact or at some other point in the week. We think the NFL competition is just going to make it difficult tonight, but we still think it’ll fare better commercially than some episodes from earlier this season.

With this being said, we wouldn’t be stunned if the finale next week generates some of the best ratings of the season, if not the best. There is no NFL or any other significant competition next week, as the Super Bowl in Atlanta is not taking place until early February. Outlander will be able to dominate the night a little bit more with one of the most-anticipated TV events of the day.
