Saturday Night Live music: Greta Van Fleet performs ‘Black Smoke Rising’

SNL

This week on Saturday Night Livewe had a chance to check out the musical stylings of Greta Van Fleet. Despite what you may have thought based on the name alone, this is actually a band rather than an individual person. They’re a rock group who are on the rise and this is about as good of a platform as you can possibly have.

The first song that Greta Van Fleet performed on the show tonight was entitled “Black Smoke Rising,” which was certainly a worthy introduction to the band’s signature sound from people who aren’t altogether familiar with it just yet. There was a lot of power in here, but beyond that, we do think that this may appeal to some old-school fans of the genre. Granted, there is also one other prevailing criticism that we’d offer in that lyrically, it was not the easiest song to understand. If you don’t know this band very well already, you probably didn’t understand much of this and just had to admire the song for the lyrical content of it more so than anything else.

We will certainly say this, though — the musicianship here was top-notch with the guitarists, and the fashion for this band was certainly conversation-worthy if nothing else.

Second performance

This song was “You’re the One,” and it actually may have a little bit more mainstream appeal than the first one that they did — it was a little bit more midtempo in nature, and we do think that the band helped themselves by carrying across a message that was fairly easy to follow and also easy to understand. The enunciation was better and there was a nice range of musicality throughout.

One thing we’ll certainly say for Greta Van Fleet more than anything else is simply this: They offer something very specific that very few other bands bring to SNL these days do — real, genuine, rock music. You’re not going to get an experience like this almost anywhere else, and if you’re watching this show to discover new music or be reminded of another time in your life, there may be something about this performance that really spoke to you. If you don’t like rock, then this probably wasn’t for you.
