Outlander season 4 finale: Is a big cliffhanger a good or a bad thing?

Outlander

We’re getting close now to the Outlander season 4 finale — after all, we’re less than two weeks away from it airing on Starz! It’s obviously the most important episode of the season but beyond that, it’s also one of the most-hyped in quite some time. We’ve heard about this time and time again in various interviews from people talking about the show.

Now, let’s talk about the idea of a cliffhanger. With the way in which the cast are promoting this final episode of the season, it is fair to assume that there could be something big like this in the closing minutes of the episode. The merits of a major cliffhanger are pretty simple: It’s the perfect way to keep people talking about the show for a long time entering the hiatus. You want viewers to remember that your show is on, and creating an enormous cliffhanger is absolutely a great way to do that for some of the show’s more casual viewers.

One thing to think about here in relation to a cliffhanger is simply this: It’s probably going to be a long time before season 5 comes on the air. Given that new episodes are not starting to film until February, we’ll consider ourselves lucky if the new season even premieres in 2019 at all. You may need some sort of huge, memorable cliffhanger to keep show-only viewers on board — the sort who don’t know the books all that well and watch at their leisure.

Of course, a counter-argument to this thinking is simply this: You don’t want a cliffhanger for the sake of a cliffhanger, and for most book readers one is entirely useless since, by and large, they know what’s coming. Creating one is almost subjective based on what audience you are catering to, and if you just have some sort of super-compelling reason in the writing to deliver on something like this.

In the end, our feeling on a cliffhanger is this: It’s best to be open-minded. While a good many of these are often created for shock value, we think that there are some good ones out there, as well. It all comes down to 1) the idea the writers have to end the season and 2) the executive of said idea when the dust settles. One way or another, we’ll get answers very soon.
