The Conners season 2 renewal: Where is the announcement?

It’s been many weeks now since reports started to come out that The Conners‘ cast was in discussions over a potential second season of the show. Yet, we’re inching closer to the finale and there is still no word on more episodes coming up.

So what’s the holdup, and is there a holdup? That’s a worthy subject of conversation given that there may be an anxiousness among viewers.

For the time being, we have the same stance on the show’s future that we’ve had for some time now: It feels as though there is going to be another batch of episodes. It doesn’t seem, at least for now, like there is any reason for it to be canceled or for it to walk off into the sunset. The ratings are still solid, and the enthusiasm among viewers still seems to be there.

So if there is such enthusiasm about another season, why the holdup? Well, a big part of this may have to do with negotiations and cast deals. It’s often easy to renew first-year shows for another season because the cast is often under contract already — typically, actors sign six-year deals when they first join a show. Yet, The Conners stems from Roseanne, and many of the deals that were there for this season were already in place in some way prior to the spin-off beginning. Because of this, we’ve got a very different sort of negotiation here than we do for a typical show in this position.

It would be wonderful if ABC could set everything up so that the renewal could be officially announced before the finale airs, but there’s also no real hurry to do so. They can wait until May if they’d like — they could also even announce a renewal before any potential deals are finalized, provided that they are extremely confident that there’s going to be more of the show coming up.

Regardless of the timing of a potential renewal, one thing remains the same — there’s probably nothing to worry about here. The Conners is almost certainly going to be back for another batch of episodes. It’s much more of a matter of when the announcement will be made rather than if.
