The Resident season 3 renewal odds: Will we get more episodes at Fox?

The Resident season 2

What are the chances of The Resident season 3 coming onto Fox? We’re back with another edition of our Ratings Watch article series today, and with that, we’re putting the focus on the Emily VanCamp – Matt Czuchry series.

While The Resident may not be getting a lot of attention as some enormous success story, it very much is in some ways — it’s got a global audience and beyond that, it may be one of Fox’s most-consistent shows. Here’s a fascinating bit of information about it so far this year — it’s averaging a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic that is almost even versus last season and it’s actually up in total viewers with over 4.8 million checking it out per episode. This is even more impressive when you remember that season 1 premiered after the NFC Championship Game and its averages were skewed in part because of that. While it isn’t getting the same numbers as its timeslot companion 9-1-1, there’s nothing to be sad about here. Fox has to be happy with the performance of the show and just how well it’s done from start to finish this year.

If there was any reason at all to be concerned about the future of The Resident, it’s the simple fact that Fox itself is in a state of transition. They’re cutting back on scripted programming — by the time the fall rolls around, they’ll really only be programming four days of the week with original content (Sunday – Wednesday, though Thursdays will be added after football). Some shows are going to be cut because of that. Yet, we do think that The Resident is higher on the pecking order than Lethal Weapon, The Gifted, or The Orville. We do also think it’s not too far behind STAR, which performs really well after Empire on Wednesday night. We do think Fox is going to have to scale back, but there’s zero evidence for now that they are going to have to scale back with this show. It’s got smart storytelling, memorable characters, and also is a part of a great lineup.

What’s happening Monday?

That’s when The Resident is back on the air and without 9-1-1 around for the winter, that will be a good test of the show’s overall strength. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the ratings and whether or not it benefited from a specific lineup more than anything.
