This Is Us season 3 spoilers: Phylicia Rashad set to play Beth’s mother

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly the legendary Phylicia Rashad will be appearing in at least one upcoming episode in the role of Beth’s mother. This is going to be tied to a big backstory episode for the character, one that has been teased as being out in the ether for a good stretch of time now. One of the big goals entering this season was to flesh out some of the show’s supporting characters further — there has already been a big episode set around Toby, and we’ve also had a chance to get a good bit more about Miguel and his family life following the Thanksgiving episode earlier this season.
For Beth, we do still have a good bit of interest in her story since other than her time growing up with Zoe, there isn’t all that much that is known about who she was in the time before she met Randall. We also definitely have more questions when it comes to what is going to happen in her future based on recent story events / the flash-forwards we’ve been seeing. All indications at the moment seem to suggest that we could be seeing a rocky road ahead for her and Randall and it’s not entirely clear if the two are going to find a way back to each other or instead crumble.
New episodes of This Is Us are slated to begin airing on NBC next week, and it’s a little bit of fortuitous timing that the network decided to schedule things this way. They didn’t have any way of knowing what was going to be happening with the Presidential Address tonight at the time that this was decided. If it was scheduled to air tonight, they would’ve been stuck in a situation where they had to figure out how to plan out the night.
Could Rashad’s gig stretch out to multiple episodes?
With this show almost anything is possible, given that you want to be able to feature as much backstory as possible since it makes the characters come to life eve more. Given that we firmly expect there to be a season 4 of the series coming down the line, we’d say that there is at least a reason for optimism. (Personally, we think that we’re going to be getting at least five years of This Is Us.)
