If there is any one thing that feels quite certain heading into House of the Dragon season 3 episode 3 on HBO next week, it is the prospect of further change. Doesn’t that feel inevitable now?

In some ways, you can argue now that Rhaenyra has achieved much of what she has wanted, given that she now sits atop the Iron Throne. However, at the same time there are significant costs to all of this, including Alicent witnessing what happened to her own father. She has lost so many she cared about and now, she has hit yet another point of no return with her childhood friend, the same person who helped her to take over the Seven Kingdoms in the first place. Alicent wanted peace, but is that now possible?

We do think that a significant chunk of the next episode is going to be spent trying to determine the character’s fate — while Rhaenyra likely will not want her dead, she finds herself in a delicate position balancing her own personal wants with how the kingdom will interpret her actions.

As for what is happening elsewhere…

With Aemond now at Harrenhal, is there a chance that he can effectively regroup? We do think that one of Daemon’s biggest mistakes has been not having the social aptitude to be able to take care of those around him, including Alys Rivers. He has allowed for people to be burned by him, and loyalty is something that does have to be earned much of the time. It is why it is so easy to say that there are elements of the new Team Black reign that are set up for disaster already.
