What’s the current state of Riverdale season 4 over at The CW? How confident should we be that we’re going to get this? In this particular article, we want to put a spotlight on the show’s current renewal odds.
We do think that, when you look at the big picture for a show like this, it’s pretty easy to feel a certain element of confidence. How in the world could you not, given the fact that this show is enormously popular all over the world, comes from an established franchise, and then also dominates social media?
Yet, in this particular article series we don’t want to make any sort of rash generalizations without actually looking at the ratings. What matters more than anything else is that a show like this does continue to fare well in the live+same-day numbers, the most important to major television networks like The CW.
To date, Riverdale season 3 is averaging a little bit over a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is certainly solid for a network like The CW. It’s also only down less than 10% from the show’s season 2 average, which is really outstanding retention for a series that is catering so much to young viewers. It’s fairly common for shows like this to lose around 15-20% of their viewership from one year to the next and this absolutely should have been something that The CW feared entering this season.
Yet, that didn’t happen, and beyond just that, Riverdale has also managed to spawn in some ways a spin-off in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina — it may not air on the same network, but we do think that its success is still validation for everything that Riverdale has done. It’s boosting the franchise’s credibility and making this comic-book world even greater.
So what are the specific renewal odds?
Think high — very high. At the moment, we have a rather-hard time imagining that this show is going to be canceled. There’s just no reason for it. The thing that we are perhaps a little bit more curious about is whether or not there will be a season 5 or a season 6 after this. Given all of these characters are at a particular point in their lives, how long do you keep this going before it starts to look a little weird that all of these people are still of a certain age? That’s going to be a challenge for the show but it’s obviously not one that it has to deal with right away.
