According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Ellen Pompeo medical drama will now have a whopping 25-episode order for this current season, which ties it for the second-longest season that it has had during its run. (The second season, somehow, aired 27 episodes — pretty unheard of for a drama series these days.)

There seems to be some division over how many ties Grey’s Anatomy has received this order, given that the season 11 episode “She’s Leaving Home” technically was told over two parts. We consider it to be two separate episodes, as do many other sources of information for the show. With that in mind, season 11 had 25 episodes, as did season 3. Season 15 is just continuing that trend.

As to why Grey’s Anatomy needed that extra episode, it’s possible that there are just some especially-meaty stories that the writers are planning to tell down the road for some of these characters — or ABC just wanted more ratings for the rest of the season. One factor here could be that Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 are being separated for much of the winter, as A Million Little Things is going to be taking its place on the schedule for at least a certain amount of time. ABC may want there to be enough episodes of the medical drama to pair with both shows so that they each benefit from what is one of the best lead-ins on TV.

As for how in the world Grey’s Anatomy can do all of this without tremendously exhausting its cast, the large ensemble helps a lot with that. There tend to be at least a few episodes a season that don’t feature more than just a few characters and that balance makes it so that everyone gets some sort of break throughout. It’s rare at this point to have a season where a single character is featured in a major way in every episode.
