Saturday Night Live: Rachel Brosnahan to host, Greta Van Fleet performing January 19

Saturday Night Live review

After a long wait, Saturday Night Live has finally announced their host for their winter premiere on January 19 — and it’s someone who many out there consider to be quite marvelous!

One day removed from another big awards-show win (this time at the Golden Globes), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan was confirmed to be hosting the show for the first time. We had thought perhaps that SNL was going to bring someone on board here who was a big name in awards season, but our assumption was that it would likely be a movie star more than someone from television. It’s actually a nice movie for the series to bring in a genuine TV star for the gig since it gives the medium a little bit more credibility — kind of a good thing, given that SNL is also a TV show, right?

As for the musical guest, Greta Van Fleet is coming on board with some of their rock stylings. For those who do not know, Greta Van Fleet is kind of like the reverse Owl City — while you would think by name alone that it is a person, it is actually a band. There are four members in this rock group, and none of them are named “Greta” — instead, they are Josh, Jake, Sam, and Danny. For those of you who like genuine rock music, this is a rather good booking for SNL as a whole and a boost to their overall musical credibility.

SNL is going to be airing at least one more new episode beyond this one in the month of January and we do hope that they continue to be interesting and daring with some of their choices. We’d like to see a former cast member at some point in the future, but we wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to a riskier choice like an athlete or someone a little bit further off the beaten path. While these shows are not often huge winners, they can at times produce a memorable moment or two courtesy of someone who is really trying to just figure out how to do comedy on the fly — and probably realizing that it is so much harder than it looks.
