Outlander season 4 episode 10 review: Roger’s discovery; Brianna’s decision

Outlander season 4

Tonight, Outlander season 4 episode 10 delivered one of the strongest episodes of the season, and also a reminder to go along with it that life at Fraser’s Ridge is always eventful. Granted, that’s what happens as a result of secrets and misinformation.

We knew that it was only a matter of time before the truth came out regarding what happened to Roger last week, and the truth started to unravel tonight courtesy of Lizzie. When Brianna continued to have nightmares on Stephen Bonnet, Lizzie started to realize that she couldn’t just keep this sort of secret from her anymore. She made it clear that her attacker had arrived to Fraser’s Ridge … or at least who Lizzie thought was the attacker responsible. Jamie beat up the wrong man and soon after Brianna realized it was Roger, she unleashed her fury on everyone involved — Jamie, Lizzie, and even Young Ian, who apparently was harboring quite the crush on her despite them being related. Ian had sold Roger to the Mohawk tribe who were in the area, and it seems as though they are heading north with him as prisoner to New York.

Arguably the best scene of the episode was when Jamie was losing his temper over the situation that he got the family in and then Brianna told him that he didn’t get to be angrier than she was. It admittedly wasn’t the best look for Jamie in this episode, especially when he accused Brianna of fabricating details of her story before she made it clear that she was with two different men — Roger and then her attacker, who was none other than Stephen Bonnet.

Knowing that he is responsible for Bonnet being alive in the first place, Jamie is making it his mission now to track him down and kill him — which is why he’s got Murtagh looking for him in Wilmington. Meanwhile, he, Claire, and Young Ian have agreed to Brianna’s demand that they make the situation right. They are going to do their part in order to track down the tribe, who has a substantial head start on them as they head back to their home.

What they don’t realize here is that Roger had some plans of his own! Obviously, he didn’t know that anyone would be coming for him — especially after everything terrible happened to him back at Fraser’s Ridge. He conjured up an elaborate escape plan that involved him doing whatever he could in order to ensure that he could get away from his captors — not only did he surprisingly make it work, but he was also able to evade them after getting free from the ropes that were holding him prisoner. There were so many things that were surprising about this that we have a hard time even knowing where to start, especially since Roger doesn’t have the familiarity with the land that they do and he’s not an athletic powerhouse. This was all about intelligence and desperation — and he certainly has both.

The big surprise of the episode

Roger, soon after his escape, discovered a standing stone! The cliffhanger of this episode now seems to be him trying to figure out if he will go back to the present, or try to find Brianna and pick up where the two of them left off. He has a difficult challenge ahead of him and if he stays in this timeline, he is probably aware of the fact that his life is in danger.

Brianna’s new mission

Much of it involves her just staying under the radar, given that she is pregnant and doesn’t want to do anything to impact the baby’s health. She and Lizzie were taken to River Run, where they can stay under the care of Aunt Jocasta. It’s not ideal (after all, the place has slaves), but it is a roof over their head and an opportunity for them to be protected for the time being. We just have a feeling that things are not going to go according to plan here.

CarterMatt Verdict

Outlander delivers another fantastic episode, one that showed further character flaws and also character determination. There were great performances across the board (especially from our cast cast once more); to go along with that, we also had some opportunity here to see the mystery and mythology of the standing stones explored once more!
