We’ve come to learn over time that the Starz drama can excel rather wonderfully even against some hefty competition, whether it be the NFL or some major competition elsewhere in terms of scripted programming. Yet, one of the things that we’ve also learned over time is that the series has struggled a little bit more commercially (at least in the live ratings) when it has aired opposite awards shows. Take, for example, opposite the Emmys back during season 3. There is a crossover here between casual viewers who watch this show and also people who watch awards shows — what makes it all the more interesting tonight is that series star Caitriona Balfe is actually nominated for her work as Claire Fraser tonight.

So what’s our current hope for the show’s ratings? Think along the lines of 950,000 live viewers. That is a drop from the week prior, but also above how the show fared on the recent December 23 episode. (We do think that airing two days before Christmas is a little bit more of a ratings distraction than having to air opposite the Globes.)

We definitely do think that there’s a significant story incentive for viewers to watch live — provided, of course, that people haven’t seen it early on the app already. Based on what happened at the end of episode 9 when it comes to Roger at the hands of Jamie, there’s a big question worth wondering in terms of precisely what is going to happen to the character. Are we actually going to see him fight his way through this? Well, we’ll be talking about that a little bit more in our review later in written and video form … coupled of course with our promo for what’s coming up on the show next.

Of course, remember this

Outlander has been renewed already through season 6, and of course there are a number of measurements that people use now to gauge the success of various shows. We do nonetheless think, though, that live ratings matter in terms of generate enthusiasm. For people who don’t watch TV on their app or On-Demand early, this is a good gauge of just how excited viewers are to watch the episode as soon as humanly possible.
