The Good Doctor season 3 renewal odds: A Ratings Report & confidence
Of course, at the moment we should say one thing about this show more so than anything is this: Why wouldn’t we have a certain degree of confidence in the future at this point? It’d be almost foolish at present not to when you think about its overall run of success to date on the air. The Good Doctor has become one of ABC’s most-consistent shows and beyond that, one of its most-popular via DVR. While it started off in a distance second place to Manifest in its 10:00 p.m. timeslot Monday nights, it has significantly closed that gap.
Ratings-wise, we would be foolish to ignore the fact that the series has dropped significantly in its 18-49 average versus last year — think in terms of more than 35%. Obviously you want to see a better live-viewer retention rate than that; but, like we’ve already alluded to, we think the show has been hurt this year by both a weakening Dancing with the Stars lead-in but then also Manifest airing up against it. Given that Manifest has a shorter overall season, there are going to be a few different opportunities for it to shine without that competition around. It’s also worth noting that in the winter, The Good Doctor will have a better lead-in courtesy of The Bachelor — the two shows may not have much of anything in common but in the end, how much of that really matters?
We do think that the show is a near-lock to get a season 3, even with the ratings dips this year, just because it is still the top-rated 10:00 p.m. scripted show that the network has. It also gets critical acclaim for the performances of Freddie Highmore and others; there is zero reason to think that it’s going to be going anywhere in the near future. That’s why we are not even classifying it as a bubble show at the moment. There’s no reason to do that when you are feeling nothing other than confidence that it is going to be coming back for more down the line.
With all of this being said…
Be sure to continue to watch The Good Doctor live! For starters, you aren’t going to want to miss anything that happens, especially following up on that crazy cliffhanger that we had at the end of the fall. Also, we just do continue to think that this is a show like no other any one that deserves every bit of attention that it can. There are probably still a lot of people out there who would love it and haven’t even discovered it!
