Madam Secretary season 5 episode 11: Will Elizabeth get out of jail?

Madam Secretary

As we look ahead to Madam Secretary season 5 episode 11 coming on CBS this weekend, it’s clear that there are BIG questions to wonder. For Elizabeth McCord, the following is clear: She’s in quite a precarious position.

At the end of the last episode, the Secretary of State was arrested after a standoff between her and the Governor of Arizona over his family-separation policy. He did everything that he possibly could to discredit and embarrass her, but unfortunately for him, it doesn’t seem like any of that has worked. She’s got a lot of people on her side and we think that this is only going to empower her as she tries to move forward.

We’ve said already that we don’t think that Elizabeth is going to be damaged at all by her arrest — she’ll be viewed as a champion by people who support her, even if there are others who use this as an opportunity to attack her further.

While we do think that there could be some emotional weight behind keeping Elizabeth locked up for a substantial period of time, that’s not something that we think is going to be coming for her. Instead, we think that the more likely scenario within this episode is that one way or another, she finds herself on the outside — whether that be via the policy ending or the federal government finding a way to intervene.

Before that happens…

We do still hope that there’s an opportunity for the writers to emphasize what Elizabeth’s situation is like in jail … even if she’s only there briefly. This is really an opportunity for the writers to give us something that we haven’t seen before, and it’s certainly a chance for Tea Leoni to deliver something story-wise that we don’t often get to see with this show. We think that it’s a mistake to shy away from playing that up — after all, how many times do you think you’re going to be in this sort of position with this story? We’re not thinking that there are all that many opportunities for it — especially if Elizabeth does end up being President at some point in the future.

While we do feel for Bess in the present, let’s make one thing clear — emphasizing heavily what is going on with her now is better for the series’ future.
