SWAT season 3 renewal hopes: The latest Ratings Bubble Report

SWAT episode 2

What are the chances of a SWAT season 3 renewal coming over at CBS? We’re back with another edition of our Ratings Bubble Report article series and in this piece, we’re taking a longer look at that very subject.

Of course, we’d love to come into this article feeling super-happy and optimistic over the future of the Shemar Moore series. However, one of the things that we always try to be in these pieces is honest. We don’t want to hand out any false hope, or make people feel as though their favorite show is safe when, in fact, there’s a little bit of danger around the corner. There’s clearly some danger here with this show.

To date, season 2 is averaging close to a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is borderline when you think about most CBS dramas on the air. While it’s not the lowest-rated show that they have, it’s slightly below SEAL Team, NCIS: Los Angeles, Hawaii Five-0, and a few others. It does have some caveats to consider, though, including that it has a difficult timeslot, a fairly-weak lead-in, and also that it has been airing against NFL football for a significant chunk of its season. The good news is that it is coming off of its highest-rated episode of the season (where it drew a 0.9 rating), which coincidentally is when it didn’t have to go up against an NFL game.

If there is a reason for optimism here, it’s that we believe CBS does have a good bit of faith still in this show. They know that they’ve got a super-bankable star in Moore, a franchise that is familiar to viewers worldwide, and also a prolific producer behind the scenes in Shawn Ryan. If the second half of this season hovers around the 0.8-0.9 level, we do think that there’s a good chance SWAT comes around for another season. It got off to a pretty touch start in season 2 ratings-wise, but maybe this is a rare case of a show actually building throughout the year rather than shedding viewers. We do think that over these winter months, SWAT has a real opportunity to take advantage of there being more available viewers.

We consider a SWAT renewal at the moment a toss-up, but there’s still plenty of time for viewers to respond to the show and tip the scales towards a season 3 happening. Just remember to watch live, and also tell some of your friends to do the same! Hopefully, the momentum that it has at the moment is something that it can continue to keep up.
