The Masked Singer season 2: How premiere success has us looking ahead

The Masked Singer

Earlier this week, Fox found itself undeniably the biggest reality hit of the season in The Masked SingerWith its colorful costumes, its sense of humor, and some surprisingly-great performances. This is a show that already seems primed in order to get another batch of episodes.

So how seriously should Fox be thinking about this already? Think in terms of very seriously. This is something that really should be on Fox’s mind and beyond that, it’s something that they may choose to order sooner rather than later. This renewal would be a nice vote of confidence for the series moving forward but, beyond that, it would be a great opportunity to really make things even stronger from a casting point of view.

One of the things that we really thought about before this season was that it was going to be almost-impossible in order to get exciting celebrities to take part in the show — or at least ones who weren’t already a part of the massive celebrity – reality TV circuit already. The simplest reason for this is just because it’s so hard to convince people that you’re not going to make them look foolish.

We’ll give producers of The Masked Singer credit for managing to have a great first star eliminated in Antonio Brown — the NFL star is someone who is a legitimately well-known person and not some reality D-lister. That sets the stage for other big names this season, but beyond that, we have a feeling that there could be many big names in the future. Celebrities will know before opting to come on board now that this series is a hit. It’s something that they don’t really have to worry about. We also do think that, at least for some of them, there could be a little bit of appeal that comes from having a gig where they are treated just like any other person. There is no special treatment here and they are not judged based on who they are. (Even behind the scenes, a good percentage of the production crew does not know the identity of the celebrity — the same goes for at least some of the audience. The big reveals are taped in front of a much-smaller audience at the end of each episode.)

Basically, what we’re trying to say here is this: The more time that Fox gives producers of The Masked Singer to plan out its future, the better.
