The Big Bang Theory season 12: Why Jim Parsons wanted to leave

Big Bang Theory season 11 episode 19

It has been known for a good while now that The Big Bang Theory is slated to end on CBS at the end of this season. Meanwhile, to go along with that it has also been fairly well known that theory star Jim Parsons is the reason why. He was the one who decided to depart the show at the end of the season, and rather than the writers try to continue it without him, everyone felt as though it was best to stop now.

But why did Parsons want to leave the show right now? That is a reasonably good question, mostly given the fact that the actor was receiving one of TV’s highest salaries for the role, in addition to getting a huge platform to do some other projects. Also, the schedule for The Big Bang Theory is not anywhere near as intense as many other scripted shows out there.

With all of this being said, Parsons tells Entertainment Weekly within a new cover story that when the dust settled, he just felt like it was time for a change in his life:

“It’s both as complex and as simple as just feeling innately that it was time. It speaks to a lot of things, none of them bad. There is no negative reason to stop doing Big Bang. It felt like we have been able to do this for so many years now, it doesn’t feel like there is anything left on the table. Not that we couldn’t keep doing it, but it feels like we’ve chewed all the meat off this bone. I guess at a personal level, it feels like the right time in my life. I don’t know what’s next for me. It’s not like there is something specific I am aiming for. I’m firmly in my middle age now. I don’t know how much longer I can wear [the T-shirts] without looking really long in the tooth. In a way, it’s exciting. What is this next chapter of life? What is this next chapter for all of us? It will be very, very sad when it does end, even knowing [I am] okay with it. People are okay when they graduate but there are frequently tears at graduation. It’s hard to say goodbye to people that you have worked with for so long.”

Even though Parsons is leaving The Big Bang Theory and the show is ending, that doesn’t mean that we are done with Dr. Sheldon Cooper necessarily. For starters, there are still many more episodes to come this season. Beyond that, Young Sheldon is still on the air and it does not appear as though that is going to be ending anytime soon. Because all Parsons has to do for that show is narrate, it is easy for him to do that and some other projects to go along with it.
