See Luther star Idris Elba’s other show — Netflix’s Turn Up Charlie

Turn It Up Charlie

While you watch Idris Elba star in Luther on British television this week, here’s something to keep in mind: You’re going to see him in a very different context not too far into the future!

Today, Netflix confirmed that they are premiering their new comedy series Turn Up Charlie on Friday, March 15, and this one should offer a refreshing change of pace for the actor. Take a look at the official logline below:

“[Turn Up Charlie is focused on] Charlie (Idris Elba), a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a ‘manny’ to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter, Gabby (Frankie Hervey).”

It’s a ridiculous sort of concept, but it’s also the sort of thing that could make for a delightfully ridiculous show. Just think about it in this sort of way — Elba is this guy who we’ve seen be pretty much awesome at everything that he does. With this show, he’s playing a character who is far more accustomed to failure. This taps into a completely different sort of his personality and hopefully, his star power is going to help to get this show a little bit of attention.

If nothing else, this ensures that Elba is going to continue to do a wide array of work in the future. One of the reasons why he and creator Neil Cross have opted against doing new seasons of Luther on an annual basis is mostly because of the mental toll that it takes. This is a show that does force you into a dark, intense corner of your mind only to then watch you try to climb back out. This is a show where Elba could show off more of a fun, paternal side and engage in something that’s totally different: Which could mean potentially performing at parties and just about anything else that a DJ would do. (This almost feels like a full-fledged version of one of Stephanie Tanner’s storylines from this past episode of Fuller House.)

While it’s really hard to gauge the success of a comedy before actually seeing it, we certainly are intrigued by the concept and of course Elba’s presence.
