Sunday night’s new episode, which featured of course the much-hyped meeting between Jamie and Brianna, drew overall a sliver over 1 million total live viewers. This is a nice increase from the December 23 episode, which had the misfortune of airing two days before Christmas. We do still feel as though the December 30 episode still faced a few challenges due to the holiday season, but obviously not on the same exact level. It did, after all, post numbers that were above the season 4 average — that sets the stage quite nicely for the remainder of the season!

Can we expect some more increases coming up? It’s going to be interesting to see what the crossover audience between Outlander and the Golden Globes on Sunday is, especially since Caitriona Balfe herself is nominated. Since live viewership is only a small fraction of the show’s overall audience, it’s not essential for anyone to watch Outlander live — they may feel in turn that a program like the Globes is. Beyond that, though, we don’t foresee there being too many stumbling blocks for Outlander in terms of competitors this month, especially given the fact that it will be over before the Super Bowl even begins.

The importance of live viewing

Let’s just put it this way — there’s a reason Starz live-tweets the episodes when they are actually on and most publications post reviews / previews the moment episodes end on the East Coast. This is a recognition that this is a viewing measure that still matters and certainly one that Starz values. They like people to watch via the app / whatever is convenient for them, but they certainly seem to recognize that this is when the highest percentage of viewers may be watching all at one time and there’s a chance to build a community out of this. As a whole, we personally think that this is one of the biggest merits to live viewing in general.

Remember that on the other side of the remaining season 4 episodes, there are two more seasons coming — we’re actually not too far away from season 5 filming now! (Last we heard, it will kick off next month.)
