Why are Lethal Weapon, The Gifted changing timeslots on Fox?

Lethal Weapon season 2 promo

Tonight, you’re going to see something a little bit different on Fox as Lethal Weapon and The Gifted have swapped out timeslots. So … what’s with that? Is there a big takeaway that we should have? In this article, we’re going to do our best in order to dive into this further.

The majority of the time, we don’t think that networks really like to switch around timeslots for most of their shows. After all, there’s no reason reason why they would want to confuse viewers! Consistency is really the most important thing that a network can offer its readers, largely because it both benefits their audience and then also benefits them. It gives them more of a chance to adequately promote a show when viewers know precisely when it’s on.

So when a show is swapped around, there is typically a good reason for it … and we like to think that there is a reasonably good one here. To be specific, we think that this has to do very much with performance. While neither Lethal Weapon nor The Gifted are necessarily drawing enormous ratings on the season right now, Lethal Weapon is clearly the stronger show of the two. As a direct result of that, we’re in a situation right now where it makes more sense for Fox to put this show on first so that The Gifted can try to catch some of that audience.

Also, there is a familiarity that many Fox viewers have with Lethal Weapon already, given the fact that the action drama previously spent the first couple of seasons airing at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and was only move back for this season. It’s possible Fox thinks that this move will also help it to draw better numbers as it fights, tooth and nail, for a season 4.

If you really want to read the tea leaves here, we’d say that this move gives Lethal Weapon a better chance at renewal and if they have a prime 8:00 p.m. timeslot, they’d rather give it to this show than The Gifted — even if having a solid lead-in helps it, the odds of it getting a renewal are still fairly low. It is, after all, the lowest-rated show that Fox has on its Monday – Wednesday lineup at the moment. (We’ll, of course, see if that lasts given some of the shows that they are putting on the air this week with The Masked Singer and the return of Gordon Ramsay.)
