Blue Bloods season 9: Should each supporting character get a spotlight?

Blue Bloods season 9

As we await Blue Bloods season 9 coming back with new episodes on Friday, why not have a chat about supporting characters? After all, they are the bread and butter of this show!

Whether it be Baker or Garrett or Henry or Sean, these are the people who really help to make Blue Bloods what it is. Some of these people congregate regularly at the Reagan family dinner table, whereas some others are not seen there at all. All are still important to the series in some way or another.

Yet, how much should we actually see them in the spotlight? At this point, it does feel clear that if one of them gets a big story, it’s going to be tied in some way to one of the other core characters. For example, a big Garrett storyline probably has to do with something that is going on with Frank, or a big Anthony plotline is likely tied to Erin. These characters aren’t going to separate themselves from the main members of the Reagan family and have a point of view that’s separate, unless of course there start to be a surprising amount of Blue Bloods spin-off series that surface.

If we were to have it our way, what we would like to see each supporting character get at least one notable side story for the rest of the season. That means that they’ll have at least 10-15 minutes to shine alongside one of the major characters, in addition to interesting little moments along the way. Would we be game to see more from them than this? Sure, but we also want to make sure that they aren’t forgotten about.

There is always an interesting way to include. Take, for example, Garrett needing Frank’s help with something from his personal life, Henry requesting some help from Jamie for a friend, or either Nicky or Anthony wanting to work with Erin to solve some sort of a problem. (We know that Nicky and Henry are technically series regulars, but they don’t really get any more attention than a Baker or a Garrett, save for a spot at the dinner table.)

Hopefully, in the new year spreading the wealth will remain a New Year’s resolution for the entirety of the Blue Bloods writers’ room. Let’s cross our fingers for some juicy drama mixed, of course, with interesting personal stories that give us some depth.
