Outlander season 4 episode 9: Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe on Brianna’s arrival

Outlander

In the aftermath of Outlander season 4 episode 9, there is certainly quite a lot to think about! It was one of the most moving installments of the entire series, largely because it offered us the chance to see Brianna finally meet Jamie Fraser — and also reunite with her mother Claire.

What made this reunion so wonderful, at least in our mind, is that it wasn’t set up to be perfect. Think in terms of how Jamie and Brianna met, let alone some of what she went through in order to find him. She sacrificed so much for that moment.

So what was it like for Sam Heughan to play that pivotal scene on Sunday night? Speaking via TVLine in a new video, he described it as follows:

“When Jamie meets Brianna, this is obviously completely unexpected. [He] is relieving himself as his daughter arrives! In fact, when he first sees her, he doesn’t quite recognize her. It’s hard to say what he feels; he feels everything.”

It takes Jamie a moment to really process everything and that is a big part of the beauty of the scene. You can really see him going through the process of understanding that it is his daughter right in front of him, someone he likely felt that he was never going to meet.

Meanwhile, Caitriona Balfe also shares in the video some of her own thoughts at getting to see Bree once more:

“She thought she may never see her daughter again [before that moment] … Now, Claire and Jamie and her family are learning how to build a home for themselves, and learning how to brave this new world.”

As for how long we can expect to see Brianna stick around, all of this feels complicated. It originally felt as though she was going to leave a reasonably short period of time after cluing her parents in to the fire that could end up taking their lives; however, she is pregnant now and may need to be around family, especially still in the aftermath of the horrific assault that happened to her. Another factor here may be Roger, provided of course that the two of them end up finding each other once more. Due to what Lizzie told Jamie, it’s fair to say that things are complicated and Roger is now in a painful spot. Sunday night’s new episode should offer up some more answers — which, by the way, you can preview further by visiting the link here.
