Why a Z Nation season 6 isn’t happening; what’s next after series finale

Z Nation interview -

If you haven’t heard, the sad-but-true news is out there that tonight’s Z Nation season 5 finale is set to be the series finale. The cast and crew were recently informed of the cancellation at Syfy and it’s something that is hard for us to wrap our head around. It’s a unique, surprising zombie show that’s had a great run and managed to be one of cable’s best underdog shows.

It’s perhaps with this in mind that there is now a feeling of prevailing sadness coming into the finale on our part, largely because five seasons is a long time for a show to be on Syfy and there is still so much story left to tell. This is a network that often cancels many shows after three or four seasons, and we certainly had our fears last year that it was going to be the end of the run then. So yeah, it’s sad that there won’t be any more Z Nation on the air in 2018, but this is a show that’s had a chance to do so much crazy stuff over time and we are thankful for that.

The obvious reason why there’s not going to be a season 6 is just because Syfy dictated it so. The ratings for season 5 were down in the all-import live+same-day measures, and as of right now there hasn’t been any public talk about reviving the series elsewhere. We’ve learned over the years to never say never, but there’s no real external buzz that something is brewing.

Here is the silver lining with the end of Z Nation — at least there will be something more coming up in this universe. Netflix has already greenlit an eight-episode prequel series-of-sorts entitled Black Summer, which stars Hart of Dixie alum Jaime King and it should premiere at some point in 2019. That series may bring you an even scarier side of this zombie world, and hopefully it will help to satisfy your craving whenever it does start streaming.

Beyond Black Summer, who knows what else this zombie universe can bring? It’s best to just think in terms of one story at a time, but our hope with that show is that it can attract both fans of Z Nation, but then also people who have never had an opportunity to see the show before. Netflix does make it reasonably easy sometimes to discover their original properties, and one of the largest issues with Z Nation for a rather-long time was that it was rather difficult to find a show that was airing on Friday nights. While it’s a fairly good timeslot for Syfy, it’s still far from the most lucrative night of the week and over the past few years it’s been becoming very crowded on Friday nights.
