The Walking Dead movies with Andrew Lincoln still set to air on AMC

Walking Dead season 8

At the moment, the potential The Walking Dead movies featuring Rick Grimes are practically an entertainment white whale. There isn’t a whole lot of information out there about them and to go along with that, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of eagerness from AMC to give away a whole lot to the fans! The first of these movies seems to still be really far away and because of that, nobody involved wants to really rush promoting anything.

Now that we have said that, isn’t it at least nice to get another reminder that these movies are in fact, still set to air on AMC? For some out there, maybe this isn’t even a reminder at all since Lincoln and the show’s producers have been reasonably vague about the project. They’ve referred to it as an AMC Original Film, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will air on the network proper. CBS Films, for example, doesn’t actually air their movies on CBS; they get larger, theatrical releases much in the same way that a lot of other movies out there do.

For the time being, Skybound’s Johnny O’Dell had the following to say in the latest The Walking Dead mailbag about the future of the Rick Grimes movies:

There are a lot of details that still have to be sorted out for the Rick Grimes movies, but for now the plan is to air the films on AMC.

What we could personally envision, more so than the movie having a full-blown theatrical release, is there being an opportunity to check the project out either via a Fathom Events or something of the like. Our basic sentiment at the moment is that the network would want to offer up at least some sort of opportunity to make money via a theatrical release, while also still keeping the properties largely exclusive to the network. They could do something akin to airing the movie on AMC first, and then doing a one-day theatrical run in hundreds of theaters to get some cash from fans wanting that experience.

One way or another, our hope is just that there will be at least some details about the Rick Grimes project in 2019 — even if the movie doesn’t come out then. There are still at least eight The Walking Dead episodes in 2019 to tide us over.
