Call the Midwife 2018 Christmas Special: Jennifer Kirby teases lighter tone

Call the Midwife

Come Tuesday, the Call the Midwife 2018 Christmas Special will be here, and we certainly do expect it to be emotional. This is a show that has a tendency to extract a lot of different feelings — it can be cheerful at times but then also bittersweet at others. It often does whatever it can to present Christmas as it is, and not just some sort of sugar-coated or over-idealized version of the holiday. It wants to present a vision of the world that is a little bit more real.

While there may be some sad moments that you see on the Christmas Special this year, rest assured of one thing: This isn’t going to be the massive tear-jerker that you saw at the end of last season with what happened to Barbara. Speaking in a new interview (per The Huffington Post), series star Jennifer Kirby had the following to say on the subject:

“‘Call The Midwife’ always gets the balance right … It’s always very joyful and even the sad bits are sort of hopeful too. It’s about the human condition and what that means and sometimes love means that you have to lose somebody that you love … It’s certainly much more upbeat than the end of the last series, but it still has definite weepy moments.”

With this in mind, we suggest that you do get out some tissues for this special since this is going to be a heartfelt, meaningful episode. It’s probably going to look and feel different than the majority of the recent season 7 episodes — heck, it could feel different than the majority of the Christmas Specials in the past! One of the things that we’ve long admired with this show is that they’ve somehow figured out a way to do some different things with many of these specials, even if on paper they have similar subject matter. We really give a lot of credit to writer Heidi Thomas here, mostly because it’s not easy to put on a different special every single year themed around the same holiday.

On the other side of the special, remember that Call the Midwife season 8 is going to be premiere on BBC at some point in January. If you are watching the series in America, the eighth season will be on the air a little bit later in the spring. Expect new arrivals, both in terms of characters and, of course, babies.
