Call the Midwife 2019 Christmas Special video: A peek behind the scenes!
If you look below (via the series’ official Twitter account), we’ve got a new tease behind the scenes at the special that is rather simple in one way, but also very appreciated. It’s a small peek behind the curtain into the process of doing the official photo shoot for the special, something that we often get every single year. It’s a chance to commemorate the special in a single image as well as highlight any changes that happen from year to year.
In the video below, you can get a little bit of a sense as to some of the story of the special this time around, including some of the themes that are going to be explored. One of the things that we’ve long appreciated about Call the Midwife with their Christmas Specials is that they are often a real celebration of Christmas as it is as opposed to some idealized version of it. While for many people out there this is a happy, joyous time of year, that is not a reflection necessarily of life for everyone. There are a number of people out there who view Christmas as much more of a somber occasion, and understandably so given that it can be quiet and rather lonely depending on who you are. This is a show that reflects the bittersweet nature of the holiday, while also still trying to present a message of hope at the very end of it. This is not one that is necessarily trying to depress you in any way.
On thing that is rather nice about the tweet below is that in addition to sharing the video, you’ve also got air times for a number of countries all over the world. We do appreciate the effort here to air the special at least reasonably close to Christmas in a number of different territories — the series does run first in the UK, but it will be turning up in many other big English-speaking nations soon after that. This special will set the foundation for the upcoming eighth season, though we’re going to have to wait a little bit longer in order to see that. As for how long we’re talking about, think along the lines of January for the UK and the spring for viewers in America. (Beyond that, we suggest looking towards your local broadcaster.)
