Timeless boss on that (possible) season 3 tease at movie’s end

At the moment, there are no official plans for a Timeless season 3, either at NBC or somewhere else. Yet, at the same time the door is very-much open for movie. The movie concluded with evidence that someone is already thinking about a time-machine prototype, even to the point of sketching it out. This is proof-positive of something that was said earlier in the movie, and why it was important for Connor Mason to keep the Lifeboat — someday, someone else would invent a time machine. They had to be prepared for it.

So why include this particular scene at the end of the movie? It wasn’t necessarily meant to lead anyone on; yet, there was an intention here to make it clear that there could be more of the story down the line. Here is what executive producer Shawn Ryan had to say on the subject via Entertainment Weekly:

“For a long time, the script ended with Wyatt, Lucy, and Rufus coming back from Brazil, and that tableau in the mouth of the Lifeboat … But, we never give up on the show because our fans never give up on the show, and we felt like it would be nice to have a little bit of an opening… We have this incredibly passionate fan base, and I felt that they were owed some hope, that there were still some stories to tell.”

Could Timeless come back years down the road?

We already detailed that the ratings for the movie weren’t altogether different from the ratings for season 2, and with that, we’re not altogether sure that there will be interested parties coming out of the woodwork for the show. Yet, funny things can happen to shows over time as more and more viewers get on board and discover the property — it leads to more demand and discussion! We wouldn’t be shocked if there is another life for Timeless years down the road if the show continues to build traction. Obviously, it’d be great to see something sooner, but our primary point here is that there could always be a little bit more Timeless and we don’t necessarily think the show ending now / not coming back soon is a sign that it will be gone forever.

Of course, this is something that we’ll have a little bit more discussion on in the event more news breaks.
