MacGyver

In this particular Midseason Report Card article, we’re talking overall about MacGyver season 3 — a show that, at least so far, has brought quite a bit of drama to the table.

Over the course of the first handful of episodes, we ended up learning a reasonable amount about some of these characters — Murdoc, for example, has more of a complicated romantic past than we knew! Meanwhile, we’ve also had a chance to learn about Matty’s past marriage to Ethan, backstory on The Ghost, and also the current status of Leanna / Bozer and Riley / Billy.

One of the things that makes this show what it is are some of the characters — their relationships are essential to making the story work. One of the reasons why MacGyver is still high on our list of must-watch episodes is the simple fact that we do care about these people so much. The cast is a tight-knit group but all of the characters have interesting stories to tell and we do find ourselves caring and rooting for many of them.

As for the cases themselves, they certainly do remain exciting and interesting. We loved the episode inspired by Day of the Dead, one with Mac and Riley primarily working together, and the entire personal arc featuring Matty and Dragonfly. Basically, a great episode of MacGyver is one where you do get some action and some creativity out in the field, but that you also have a chance to learn a thing or two more about some of the characters along the way. This first half of the season brought that in spades, while also cementing further some of the show’s best recurring players.

Midseason Verdict

Moving into the second half of the season, it would be nice to maybe explore more of Mac and Bozer’s friendship outside the job and also maybe get to see the team do something where they all get to be undercover someplace at the same time. (Think the casino episode from season 2.) For the most part, though, we did really love the action and the drama that MacGyver brought to the table in the first part of the third season and we certainly hope that the momentum continues. We want some more action, additional drama, and also chances to learn more about the characters.

Do we understand that Jack may be leaving by the end of the season? Sure, and if that happens, we only hope that it makes a certain element of sense for the show and the world as a whole. Grade: B+.
