According to a new report coming in right now via Deadline, My Wife and Kids alum Tisha Campbell is being brought in to play the role of Carol Larabee, wife to Jonathan Adams’ character of Chuck Larabee. Campbell is reportedly set to recur, which means that we’re going to get a chance to see her on at least a couple of episodes, if not more.
So what happened here with Erika Alexander, who previously played the role? It seems as though scheduling issues are the main factor for her departure, similar to why we’ve seen so many other recastings / shakeups in the past. Alexander was not a regular on Last Man Standing even before the ABC cancellation, so with that, there was nothing holding her to the show. She already has two recurring roles on Black Lightning and then also over on HBO with Insecure, and given that those both film in different places, that makes things all the more difficult to schedule.
As most Last Man Standing fans know, there was a very-famous recasting earlier this summer when Molly McCook was brought in to replace Molly Ephraim, who played the role of Mandy Baxter on the first six seasons of the show. Because of the cancellation and the time separating it from the Fox version of the show, there was no guarantee it would ever come back and the cast had to go find other work. All things considered, it’s remarkable that there are so many original cast members who were able to come back. Kaitlyn Dever is not a regular this season, but at least the writers and producers have found some ways to work around her schedule and film her whenever they can.
Following tonight’s new episode “The Gift of the Mike Guy” (watch a preview for it over at the link here), the series will be on hiatus until the new year. That’s when we expect the new version of Carol to debut. We understand the recasting, mostly because you want to be able to reuse the character … even if it may obviously be disappointing that the original actor was not available.
