The Conners season 2 could be expanded up to 13 episodes

The Conners

Earlier today, we said that one of our hopes with The Conners season 2 was that the ABC show could have an expanded episode order of 13 episodes. Now, it does appear as though that may very well happen.

According to a new report from Deadline, the cast is currently in negotiations for a slightly-expanded second season that would bring the total count up to 13 after having 11 episodes for the first season following the Roseanne revival. This is an episode count that makes a significant more amount of sense than what we’ve seen this time around. While doing 10-11 episodes may work rather well for a show like Game of Thrones, it doesn’t work as well for a sitcom. These are 30-minute episodes, commercials included, and there are only opportunities to tell so much story here. You don’t want to have such a long hiatus that people forget about you or a lack of time for viewers to really get to know a lot of the different characters.

With thirteen episodes, at least some of the opportunities have expanded a little bit and you can also have a little bit more of an ordinary run of episodes. If we were to guess, our feeling is that the season would run from late September until early January — it’d be the same sort of run that the series is having this time around, with the main difference being that the new season would start around the same time as the other shows on the schedule. (The main reason why season 1 started later was because of all the rejiggering that needed to be done after Roseanne Barr’s firing.)

For now, we’re willing to say that The Conners season 2 is somewhat close to a slam dunk. This is a series that has performed very well for ABC this fall and while there has certainly been controversy that it’s waded through, at the end of the day it is generating better ratings than any other comedy that they have. This really means something and that’s something that, more than likely, ABC is going to want to look at as a positive reason to want to keep the show around for quite some time. If the ratings hold reasonably steady, we have a hard time thinking that season 2 is going to be the end of the line, either.
