According to a report from the Futon Critic, the ABC series starring John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, and Laurie Metcalf will be back on the air with new episodes come Tuesday, January 8 — that means that there will be a hiatus of just under a month. While that’s not a particularly-short hiatus, there are certainly worse ones out there. This does enable ABC to air the remainder of their episodes for this season in January before allowing themselves to move forward for February sweeps. (There are no firm details about episode 9 as of right now; we’ll provide more on CarterMatt when they are out.)
One of the important things to remember for The Conners was that it was always meant to be a fairly-short run for this season. Because so many of these cast members are busy working on other things and this is, save for one episode, the deal that they had on Roseanne, this was the expectation so many of us had entering the season for them.
So what are the odds for more down the line?
It’s the same as it’s always been — if the cast wants to do more, there will be more. It’s really just up to what this group, plus the writers and the producers, want to do. There may have been a sense of obligation in coming back this time around to see the contracts through — there’s also probably a rapport with the cast and crew that they wanted to hold onto. As we move forward now, though, some of that rapport is going to evaporate and that leaves the show in a little bit of a different spot. They could continue it (the ratings are certainly good enough), but we’d also understand moving forward and doing other things now. This show may have a fairly-easy schedule (most sitcoms do), but there is obviously a lot of baggage that comes with it because of the history with Roseanne Barr. That may not be something that everyone out there is particularly interested in carrying around with them forever.
