Tonight, we were introduced to a violent UnSub by the name of David Smith, someone who just so happened to be the son of Joe Smith. He was an UnSub from many years back, someone who had a knack for killing female victims and cutting out their hearts. He did that as a response of rage and heartbreak and tonight, we saw David pick up the tradition from his dad. The difference this time around is that he was killing men and committing the same acts on them. Before that, though, he used young women in order to lure these men in. He was a desperate, lost, and violent soul.
What was interesting about the case itself was that it threw the BAU back into a very complicated part in their lives — Prentiss’ career was in a spot of flux, and she wasn’t able to check up on him all that much over the years. This case brought her back as she played what-if and questioned if there was something that she could have done that was different … something where she could have saved lives. She really should not have had the weight of the world on her shoulders, but it’s just a part of who she is. That’s in her DNA.
Lucky for Prentiss…
We saw tonight that she had an opportunity to actually release some of what was on her mind in the form of Mendoza. She met him earlier this season, and we saw the two of them together at the start of the episode. She had been too busy with work in order to see him for a while … but she admitted after going through the case that she had some walls that were up because of doing this job for so long. She could’ve gotten out of work in the past for him had she really pushed for it and she’s viewing this now as an opportunity to make things right. She wants to find a way in order to take some steps forward in her relationship with him … which is great for her, given that we think that there is a rather-nice opportunity for this relationship to go places.
Mendoza, like Emily, has his own scars of war — he understands what she’s going through and if the two can be open with each other, they may end up going somewhere.
CarterMatt Verdict
There were happy moments at times in this Criminal Minds and also some sad ones. Yet, through it all we had a great performance from Paget Brewster as we experienced some of Prentiss’ pain, but also a source of happiness and hope for the future. This was another reminder that she is as great of a multifaceted character as they come in this world and the more spotlights that we have of her as the story goes on, the better off we’re going to be in the end.
