While tonight is in fact the final episode of Criminal Minds for the calendar year, know that CBS isn’t going to make you wait an extremely-long time to see some of what is coming up next. The next installment of the series is going to hit the airwaves on Wednesday, January 2, and over the course of “Night Lights,” you should get a chance to see a disturbing case that may have a connection to another that recently took place in the region.

Below, CarterMatt offers up the Criminal Minds season 14 episode 11 synopsis with some more news as to what’s coming up:

“Night Lights” – The BAU team heads to Portland, Ore., to investigate a chilling abduction that may be linked to a local couple killed in their home a week earlier, on CRIMINAL MINDS, Wednesday, Jan. 2 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

One thing that is interesting about this episode, at least superficially, is that there isn’t a personal storyline teased in the synopsis at all. That’s a little bit of an aberration for this season, which has done a fairly-decent job over time of teasing that there are some big stories coming for some particular characters. We’ve also gotten a chance to see / hear about specific episodes directed by cast members, which we know that there’s at least one more of coming in an installment via AJ Cook.

The thing that may be a little bit harder to swallow at the moment is the simple fact that there are only a few more episodes to come this season before we get around to the finale … which may actually end up being the series finale. That’s absolutely not something that is altogether fun to think about, but we do have to face the reality of it. Criminal Minds has had a great run, but CBS doesn’t fully own it and its fate is currently hanging in the balance. Enjoy the final episodes this season, and be sure to watch live while you’re at it. Really, this is the only way to guarantee that there could be a little bit more coming down the line.
