It’s the news that we’ve long hoped to see when it comes to the Supernatural 300th episode, and it’s now official: Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be coming back as John Winchester for the pivotal episode.

Today, The CW confirmed that Morgan will be coming back for the first time in more or less a decade for the landmark episode, slated to air in early February. There are so many different things that the series could explore with John, and at this point, we’re just grateful that the writers opted to not recast the character and simply put him on hiatus. (The reason why we haven’t seen more of John Winchester over the years is mostly due to Morgan’s own schedule, which included stints on The Good Wife, The Walking Dead, Grey’s Anatomy, and a number of other shows.)

In a statement all about the news, here is what executive producers Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer had to say:

We’re incredibly excited to have Jeffrey back for this milestone episode, and think fans will love what we have planned for his character… and a few other surprise guest stars.

One of the reasons why this gig was able to happen is mostly the result of timing. They were able to find a way to do this when Morgan was not working on The Walking Dead, and that may not have been possible in some other part of the year. It’s a great get for the show and it’s an excellent way in which to promote the show for some old-school fans who especially love the first few seasons. This is a show with such a deep bench that there are so many guest stars from the first few years who could be brought back, provided that the circumstances for it work.

The big thing to remember, judging from this statement alone, is that Morgan is just one of many surprises that the show producers have in store. While it’d be great to be able to report on and discuss some other ones in advance, we do hope that some are kept a secret until the episode actually airs. It’s not all that often that a network show can actually deliver a secret guest star, mostly because we live in this era where someone likes to spoil just about everything in advance.
