For everyone out there who loves Gotham, today is going to be a pretty emotional one. After all, this is the final day of production for the Fox drama.

In a new post on Twitter, series star David Mazouz (who plays Bruce Wayne) made it clear that today was the end of the road for the cast and crew, at least on the production end. It’s been an incredible five seasons to get to this point and the entire team has worked hard to turn the show into something special. While there’s ironically no Batman on the show (or at least there won’t be until the series finale), this actually feels a little bit more like the Batman comics than the majority of adaptations that are out there. This does really frame perfectly the decay and darkness of the city while also giving you a good sense of the colorful characters and villains who populate it. There are a lot of genres competing with each other in a series like this but somehow, the writers have been able to pull it off.

What we know at the moment about Gotham season 5 is that the city will be in complete disarray for much of it, as villains have taken over various sectors and it’s going to be increasingly hard for Jim Gordon and the rest of the GCPD to find a way in order to contain it. Yet, they’re going to work their hardest in order to ensure that they can while Bruce, in the process, continues to train himself and prepare to be Batman at some point down the line.

The final season of Gotham is going to be premiering on Fox early on in the new year, and this particular batch of episodes will also include the landmark 100th installment of the show. What’s a little bit different this time around is that the final episode being shot is not actually the last one to air; there were two episodes ordered late, and the scenes for the series finale have been filmed for a good while now. We just hope that the final season does live up to some of the sky-high expectations that we’ve got.
