The bad news coming out of the fall finale is pretty simple: There’s not going to be any other episodes this year. (Why would it be called a “fall finale” otherwise?) With that being said though, you are certainly going to have a chance to see some more stories featuring Nick Gehlfuss and the rest of the cast when you get around to the new year. New Chicago Med episodes are currently poised to air at some point in early 2019, presumably January based on casting reports online. It’s possible that NBC will offer up a firm return date during the three-hour One Chicago fall finale block tonight, so if there is some further update, one will be handed down here. (Update: January 9.)
At one point, it did look as though NBC was going to temporarily shelve Chicago Med in order to plug in The Titan Games on that night, but they have since decided against that after this show proved itself to be a ratings beast. In a lot of ways, we’d argue that the One Chicago block has in general far surpassed many expectations that fans had going into it. The ratings have been incredibly solid from start to finish and with that in mind, it is hard to imagine NBC ever wanting to do anything different schedule-wise with this series.
So where could we see things go from here?
It’s no secret that there is a big cliffhanger coming at the end of the fall finale, so expect the midseason premiere to effectively try to reset some of the story after whatever happens tonight.
Down the road, though, we do know thanks to our recent interview with executive producers Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider that there are some interesting people coming back. For example, Ato Essandoh is going to be reprising his role as Dr. Latham and beyond that, you are going to have more of an opportunity to see Patti Murin back as Nina Shore! The Vicky Glass character is also going to be sticking around and at some point before the end of this season. Dr. Ethan Choi’s sister Emily is going to be coming back. Are there going to be some bumps in the road when it comes to her relationship with Bernie? At the moment, that certainly feels possible.
