Hawaii Five-0 season 9 spoilers: How is Michelle Borth returning?

According to a new report coming in via TVLine, the upcoming January 4 installment is going to be featuring the character of Catherine Rollins for the first time since this past spring. What’s she going to be doing this time around? Well, let’s just say that she could prove rather valuable in helping McGarrett trick down a murderer. There’s also a personal connection here — the murderer is responsible for the death of someone close to him. Danny’s also going to be joining McGarrett in this quest, as will a number of other familiar faces. This episode should have a heavy action feel to it, and seeing everyone team up with this specific cause should prove to be exciting from a nostalgic standpoint alone.
So could there be some romantic sparks with Borth’s return this time around? While there are certainly no guarantees, Steve is at least single now — the last time Catherine was on the show, he was technically still in a relationship with Lynn (who hadn’t actually been seen on the series in quite some time before then.) While we’d say that there is an issue in pairing up Steve and Catherine given that Borth doesn’t tend to make frequent appearances, that wasn’t exactly an issue with Steve and Lynn in recent years.
More so than romance though, it does appear that there is a specific reason for Borth’s return and we would anticipate the mission is going to be the top priority here. This season has certainly put Steve through an emotional roller-coaster already, one that began with the return of Greer before putting him through a heck of a lot of torment. That’s far from over moving into Friday’s episode, as you will see Greer returning and Steve traveling to the mainland in order to pursue a new lead. He’s also going to have some company in the form of another familiar face in Terry O’Quinn’s Joe White, who is also making his first appearance on the show since this past spring. Anytime that we have Joe back around, there’s a reasonably good chance that some of McGarrett’s military background is going to prove essential to the mission.
Beyond this episode, we wouldn’t count out another appearance for Borth down the line — it does feel like there is a willingness to keep bringing her back.
