Even though The Amazing Race 31 is apparently not going to premiere on CBS until we get around to May, that’s not stopping CBS and the show’s producers from going ahead and kicking off production for season 32.
Filming for this upcoming batch of episodes has been going on for a while, and without giving too much away, it does appear as though the network is going for new cast members for this season as opposed to recycling a bunch of famous reality stars from other shows. That’s a big part of the casting for season 31 — stars from Big Brother, Survivor, and past Amazing Race seasons are going to be competing for a chance to win the grand prize.
While this season will be easily wrapped up by the end of the year, don’t be altogether shocked if The Amazing Race 32 is put on hold for a really long period of time before it airs. Given that season 31 is probably not going to be done airing on CBS until July or August, more than likely season 32 will not air until January, at the earliest. This show has long been a utility player for CBS, one that they can plug in at just about any point that they need a show to come on the air. We do think that this is how they are also treating the franchise now. While season 31 may be scheduled for the spring, there are situations in which we could envision it premiering earlier if there are some other shows on CBS that fail to live up to expectations.
Perhaps the biggest surprise that we’ve got on The Amazing Race right now is strictly that season 30 averaged almost a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, an incredible increase over season 29 and the best ratings for the show in years. Why wouldn’t CBS want to just find a way to get the show back sooner and try to replicate that success … especially with the theme that they’ve got for season 31? That just seems to be the most logical choice to build the series into something more, but clearly they’ve got some other plans and they seem to think that there are some other things that they can do that are clearly going to work for them.
Anyhow, the big takeaway here is just the fact that CBS is moving forward with a season 32 of The Amazing Race, so you don’t have to worry about that even though it did take a rather long period of time for them to get a season 31 of the show back on the air.
