The Amazing Race 31: Looking ahead in our midseason premiere series

Amazing Race 30 return date

We’re back with yet another edition of our ongoing Midseason Preview series, and here, we’re taking a look at a show we very much love in The Amazing RaceWe assume that this is one that CBS is putting out early on in the new year — think in terms of a Survivor midseason replacement, similar to what they did in season 30. Yet, the network definitely does still have the power to do whatever they want with the show and give us it when and how they want.

So what do we know right now? There are a few different things that are reasonably confirmed, and that’s what we rea touching on within this article — rest assured, though, that there are no spoilers ahead! We don’t want to ruin anything within this piece for anyone.

The contestants – There are teams taking part in season 31 from all three main CBS reality shows: The Amazing Race, Survivor, and Big Brother. On paper it seems like the Amazing Race veteran teams would have a big advantage, but we don’t really think that this is the case. This show has a lot of luck built into it in between U-Turn legs, bad taxis, and also airport drama. There is a small amount of strategy, but not anywhere near on the lines of the other shows. If you just run your own race and don’t make mistakes, there’s a pretty good chance that you’re going to make it to the end. It’s all about being smart and having the right combination of physical fortitude and mental willpower.

Where are the teams heading? – Based on some officially-confirmed information (from publications; not social media), teams have been spotted this season in Japan as well as the Netherlands, of course in addition to the United States where they took off. We don’t think that knowing locations constitutes all that much of a spoiler, even if we wonder how much new ground there is for the series to explore in Japan at this point.

Are there any other new twists? – There’s nothing confirmed at the moment, but we don’t think that this is the biggest priority for The Amazing Race as a franchise. Instead, it seems to be more about selling viewers on the format that is already there. They are counting on the fact that diehard Race fans will watch because they love the show, and fans of Survivor / Big Brother will watch because of the cast. We do like the shows where we get to know all-new people since a part of this feels manufactured, but if it helps to get the series many more seasons on the air, there is virtually zilch for us to be complaining about here. Let’s just be grateful for the show that we’ve got.
