Madam Secretary season 5: Should Dmitri return at some point?
With that in mind, we like to think that we’ve got a rather-important one for this particular piece: Should Dmitri return in a larger capacity later this season? Even though the character may be in effect exiled in Alaska, it is pretty darn clear at the moment that he is not gone from the world completely. He is still being included, in one way or another, as a part of the series, and we have a hard time thinking that this is going to change in the near future.
Basically, Dmitri’s role in the story at present seems to be in connection to Stevie — he is basically the one who got away. The two cared about each other on some deep level, but the problem here is that Dmitri had a near-constant target on his back and Stevie could someday be the daughter of the President. This is not a relationship that is particularly tenable, and really, being stationed in Alaska is the only way for Dmitri to be safe. He clearly still thinks about Stevie, which is why he had his sister come and look after her in the aftermath of the White House explosion. They were allowed to exchange letters, and with those, we got another clear reminder that there are still some feelings there.
At the moment, it’s too hard to imagine that this story is completely over — Dmitri and Stevie at this point feel a little bit star-crossed. They care about each other deeply and, to go along with that, the way in which they feel about each other is probably amplified only by the distance. While we do think Stevie will move on with her life eventually, there is a part of her that may feel like she wants to see Dmitri again.
Judging from the fact that we just saw a storyline bringing the character back into the world, our feeling is this: It’s not over, at least not forever. Maybe it’s something that will be gone for the remainder of the season, but we do think that there is going to be a time in which we do end up seeing the Dmitri character back in the world … it’s either that or we end up seeing Stevie find her way to Alaska, as improbable as that does seem at the moment because of the obvious security risks present there.
