House of the Dragon season 3 episode 6: Criston’s acceptance?

From where we stand at present, one thing feels clear entering House of the Dragon season 3 episode 6: We could be at the end for one Criston Cole. He is a polarizing character and ironically, he has found a way to make himself that in the eyes of those around him.

For more evidence of that, just look at what he did at the end of this past episode! We just saw Cole indicate to Gwayne that he understands he is on a suicide mission marching his army forward. Why still do it? It really just seems like he wants a notable death. It is something that he chooses and for one of the first times in his life, he is doing it totally for himself and not so much for anyone else.

So why is Cole so dead-set on this beyond what we’ve mentioned? In an interview with Variety, Fabien Frankel (who plays the character) indicates that he really does not overthink his potential demise:

I don’t know if there’s anything in his head — it’s like he said, “Hell bent in glory,” right? Criston Cole started as a soldier before the 20-year stretch that he spent at King’s Landing — that’s how he started, and that’s how he wants to finish. In his mind, the only honest version of himself is the soldier. Everything else is pretense; the diplomat is pretense; the Hand of the King, there’s a level of pretense; Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, there’s a level of pretense. I suppose they’re all psychological, brain-led jobs. He isn’t that way, he’s very much led by his sword and his fighting instinct. The idea that that’s how he will be remembered, I think, feels honest.

Of course, whether or not he truly dies does remain to be seen, especially since this is a show that does love its fair share of twists.
