Saturday Night Live expectations: Will Claire Foy, Anderson .Paak deliver?

Saturday Night Live review

This weekend’s new episode of Saturday Night Live has quite the unusual combination at the center of it with Claire Foy and Anderson .Paak. So … will it work?

At the moment, it feels like it’s almost impossible to know just because of the fact that the series is really based on the writing. Sure, it always has been, but the writing has seen a significant step down as of late. There aren’t as many interesting characters or defining live sketches. The show has become increasingly reliant on cameos and current events that there isn’t all that much of a soul in the middle of it anymore. The live sketches feel repetitive and, for the most part, the cold opens have become fairly tired. These are the things that need to be fixed, mostly because of they aren’t, there’s really not anything that Foy is going to be able to do.

We do think that Foy is going to be coming on board with an interest in trying to do a number of different things. This is a great case of someone coming on SNL who is known more for drama, and she is probably going to do everything that she can in order to deliver on this show. She’s probably itching to do something that is fun and comedic for American audiences. It’s certainly possible that there is a spoof for The Crown in here, mostly because that is probably what a good three-quarters of viewers familiar with her probably know her for. (We know that Foy is doing movies now, but she is one of those people we’re going to forever associate with the world of TV first and foremost.)

As for Anderson .Paak as a musical guest, we’re not going to even pretend like he is someone we’re 100% familiar with because we’re not. Yet, we do like that he’s so game to play along in the promo below. There’s not all that much in here that is actually funny, but that’s typically the case with almost all SNL promos. Typically, though, it’s a good sign when you end up seeing performers really relishing being on this show and trying to have a rather-good time along the way.
