Doctor Who – New Year’s Special: First details, Jodie Whittaker photo!

Come January 1, something completely different (and fun!) is going to arrive on the BBC in the Doctor Who – New Year’s Christmas Special. This is going to be a chance to celebrate this monumental achievement and, beyond just that, this marks a great opportunity to see another exciting new story featuring Jodie Whittaker and the rest of the cast. The first photo featuring Whittaker can be seen above, and it certainly is festive — though it is not exactly giving a whole lot else away to go along with it.

Below, CarterMatt’s got the full Doctor Who – New Year’s synopsis below with some of the first details for what is coming up:

“As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring, from across the centuries of Earth’s history. As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?”

So basically, this entire episode is going to be about a historical threat that is stemming from the past. It’s reasonable to expect this given that history has been a major part of Doctor Who season 11 as a whole. We’ve seen The Doctor and her friends head back through time already in order to ensure that the course of history is possible, and we do think that all of this is, at least in part, a move to remind us that humanity is very much at the core of everything that Doctor Who does. While we do understand that this is a science-fiction series that does like to offer up a wide array of different twists and turns, at the same time isn’t there still an emotional core to much of what we see? Life is about the relationships that define us and some of the friends that are there with you. This is a community Doctor Who, and it is very much a different sort of Doctor Who than you’ve ever seen in the past.

New episodes of Doctor Who will probably air a little bit later on in the year — it’s inevitable that there is going to be a season 12, mostly because the ratings of the show have been great and there is enthusiasm all over the world. As for whether or not this is the only New Year’s Special that we end up seeing down the road, that remains to be seen.
