While the Outlander season 4 episode 4 live ratings may only represent a small piece of a much-larger puzzle, it is still nice to see them recover from two of the show’s weaker outings in some time.

Sunday night’s new episode “Common Ground” ended up generating as a whole 960,000 live viewers, a nice increase of almost 100,000 from the previous week’s season-low outing. This is the first time that Outlander has improved on a previous outing this season, and it also just so happens to be the series’ best total performance since the premiere. While the average numbers for season 4 are still down, we do want to reiterate that when the dust settles, this really doesn’t matter all that much. As we’ve noted, Starz cares first and foremost about subscriptions, and then after that the total number of multi-platform viewers.
In actuality, the biggest reason to continue following along the series’ live+same-day ratings is the simple fact that with a series like Outlander, you constantly want to see the show getting the attention and publicity that it deserves. It keeps it at the forefront of viewers’ minds, and with that, reporting great ratings is the best possible way to keep the series in the headlines. The longer that can happen, the more popular the show can become. Since Starz doesn’t accurately report multiplatform viewers on a regular basis, live viewers are often the only measure that we have to gauge popularity beyond how much attention the series receives from its own diehard following.
Do we foresee the ratings rising for at least a few episodes coming in the future? With Brianna set to venture into the past, we do think that it’s something that could happen on Sunday. This is one of the most-hyped events of the season, and these are the sort of thing that could convince some viewers to check out the show live instead of watch via DVR / On-Demand after the fact. (Of course, the majority of you reading this piece will likely watch it early via the app, but there is a larger contingent of fans beyond who we typically hear about on the internet.) Beyond Brianna’s journey into the past, there’s one other highlight we can foresee getting big ratings (spoiler alert from the books) — the eventual meeting of Brianna and Jamie. That’s the sort of thing that could generate at least solid gains for the series.
