A Million Little Things season 2 renewal odds: Will it happen at ABC?
Going into the fall season, we did certainly think that this relationship drama was one of the more interesting prospects for ratings. This was sold almost as ABC’s answer to This Is Us, a raw and super-personal drama that is all about interesting people and some of the ways in which they are intertwined. It was replacing Designated Survivor on the night, and given some of that show’s live ratings woes on ABC for the second half of last season, it’s been hard to gauge just what the network’s expectations are here.
The good news, at least at present, is that A Million Little Things has been handed already a full-season order. As for the bad news, it’s fairly simple in that this is no guarantee for another batch of episodes down the line. That’s not something that the network will make a full determination on until we get to May sweeps.
So how is the series actually performing at the moment? We’d say that it’s a mixed bag. It premiered with an okay-for-the-timeslot 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, but ever since then it’s been steady at around a 0.8 rating. If it keeps that the remainder of the season, there’s always a little bit of hope for a renewal. The problem comes more in the event that it drops down to a 0.7 or even a 0.6 in the new year, given that these are the sort of numbers that could lead to some sort of actual cancellation. (Alas, most shows do tend to lose number as the season goes along.) One other thing that ABC has to consider is that most shows do tend to lose around 10-15% of their audience from one season to the next. With that, they have to figure out whether or not the series would still be making a good profit for whatever its season 2 ratings are.
As of right now…
We’re cautiously optimistic about a renewal. Yet, we like to be realistic for such things and we don’t want to say for now that we’re 100% confident in something without seeing the numbers from the new year. The most important thing that A Million Little Things has accomplished, at least for now, is coming up with a series that has the attention of a devoted audience. Now, it’s all about maintaining and finding a way to keep some of those viewers around.
ABC has until May, more than likely, to announce the future of this show.
