Poldark season 5: What’s one of the big, early themes?

Poldark

There is, unfortunately, no new episode of Poldark airing on PBS tonight — with that in mind, we have nothing to do other than try to look forward.

As we do approach season 5 when it premieres in 2019, it appears as though one of the major themes is going to be simply this: Change. There’s an enormous time jump potentially coming, or at least that is the case if the series is staying reasonably close to the source material. This season could look and feel very much different than any that you’ve had a chance to see beforehand. Some of the Poldark kids could be a lot older and we could be looking at a very different sort of story moving forward.

Basically, one of the biggest things that we’re anticipating here is a story all about legacy, and about characters trying to figure out exactly where they stand and how they will be remembered. At the end of season 4, George Warleggan ended up losing his wife Elizabeth. As we move forward now, the question that we wonder is whether or not his entire attitude will change. All of a sudden, this character no longer is blocked off by someone telling him not to go after Ross anymore. He may be eager to seek vengeance for whatever misdeed he feels necessary, and we do think there is an epic battle sort of thing that is coming featuring a number of these characters. We’re certainly eager to see what this showdown is going to look and feel like, whenever of course it happens.

One of the most remarkable things about Poldark, though, is that no matter when the series is set, the romance and the drama are still very much there. This is a show that has figured out a rather lovely rhythm for itself. It know what it is and what it wants to deliver to viewers. At this point, we just have an opportunity to sit back and enjoy how the rest of the show unravels.

Is there pressure to end Poldark the right way? Sure, but so long as they structure the finale like many of the past ones, they should be fine. The worst possible thing that they could do is try to take on too much when they could just figure out a way to stay true to themselves and the journey that we’ve had to see to date.
