As we move into The Walking Dead season 9 episode 8 this weekend, it’s clear that there is no love lost between some of the communities. When Michonne and Siddiq arrive at Hilltop with some new arrivals looking for a home, they are met with a less-than-warm welcome. As a matter of fact, they are forced to abandon most of their weapons before they may be even considered for entry.

So what is really going on here to make Hilltop so uninterested in seeing Michonne or any newcomers? That’s the big takeaway that we’ve got from this video, and it serves as another reminder of the massive time jump. The Walking Dead is clearly not interested in just telling the same stories that it has, and it also makes a reasonable amount of sense that there would be a lot of upheaval in the years that we’ve been away from these characters. Something happened to cause Maggie to be MIA, we’ve got new power structures in some of the communities, and it’s not altogether hard to imagine that there were a few clashes because of all of this. The time jump does matter a good deal to these characters and to this world.
With all of the dissension that is in the ranks with these communities, though, it does also open the door to the latest threat that is set to arrive in the Whisperers. It’s going to be so much easier for them to creep in and cause chaos if these communities are spending their time obsessing over each other. It leads to a vulnerability that Alpha and others could expose. The Whisperers seem to be arriving in full force during the midseason finale and in the aftermath of this, all signs suggest that they are going to be a pretty-significant force to be reckoned with as we start to inch ever closer to the second half of season 6. (While there is no official return date for some of those episodes just yet, all signs point to us getting to check them out in February.)
This episode will likely deliver some answers when it comes to the statuses of some of these communities, but it’s probably also going to leave some floating around in the ether. It’s possible that even more information is going to be fully dispensed through the remaining eight episodes of the season.
