This Is Us season 3 episode 9 preview: Is Kevin’s journey complete?

This Is Us season 2

As we move into This Is Us season 3 episode 9 on NBC next week, are we nearing the end of the road for Kevin in Vietnam? If nothing else, it does feel like the entirety of his story is about to come full-circle. He’s getting a chance to finally arrive to the place that his father served — which also does just so happen to be the same place we will see in the past. Jack is still back in that timeline, trying to find a way to get through to Nicky and understand how to help him; yet, it’s almost impossible. He’s seen and endured some things that, to be frank, he wasn’t wired to see. These are things that were going to forever haunt him, and you have to think on some level that these contributed to his death.

11/27/2018 (09:00PM – 10:01PM) (Tuesday) : Kevin arrives at the Ville his father served in. Kate pursues a new opportunity. Randall debates Councilman Solomon Brown. In the past, Jack struggles to get through to his brother. TV-14

Given that this episode is entitled “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning,” that suggests in some way a sense of closure — just as much as it may also suggest that some of these writers may just be really big fans of Smashing Pumpkins. This episode is going to give us an opportunity to hopefully dive into the climaxes of some of these current stories, and that is absolutely something that will lead into some other important subject matter. For Jack, for example, we do still think there are other parts of his relationship with Rebecca that can be explored further — plus also the time immediately following the death of his brother.

As for the present, the debate between Randall and Solomon Brown should prove fascinating. On one level, it’s easy to label Randall as the favorite just because we know him and his story on the show. Yet, simultaneously he is fighting in this case at a serious disadvantage, largely due to the fact that we actually don’t know anywhere near as much about how this community is going to embrace him. While Solomon Brown may not be the perfect politician by any means, he’s the politician that these people know and that matters. He’s been a part of that community and Randall hasn’t.
